Four ways to avoid costly roof damage

Rate this Entry
Roof maintenance is something most homeowners never give a second thought. When you think about it, thatís somewhat understandable. After all, your roof is up above you and out of sight. As long as itís doing its job of keeping your home protected from the elements, itís easy to forget that itís even there. But roofing experts recommend that to get the most out of your roof, you need to perform regular roof maintenance. At least a couple of times a year, your roof should be inspected, either by you or by a roofing professional. Along with inspecting the roof for signs of aging, here are four other roof maintenance tasks that should be done.

Look closely around the chimney

Sometimes, the problem with the roofing system has nothing to do with the shingles. Sometimes the chimney is to blame. Every now and again itís a good idea to take a close look at your chimney to make sure there are no cracks in the mortar and no gaps in the flashing around your chimney. These are ways that water can get in and damage your roof and your homeís interior.

Keep rain gutters clear of debris

Your rain gutters are an integral part of your roofing system but theyíre often forgotten. If you allow your gutters to become clogged with leaves, twigs, and other debris, water can get trapped on your roof. Depending on how many tall trees are near your home, you may need to clean out your rain gutters once or twice a year, or as often as every month. If youíre not comfortable getting up on a ladder to do the job yourself, you can hire a rain gutter cleaning service.

Keep an eye out for ice dams

In the winter months, watch for ice dams forming along the edge of your roof and in your gutters. Thatís a sign that your attic insulation is insufficient which is causing snow to melt only to refreeze at the edges of the roof. Though ice dams and icicles might look nice, theyíre bad news for your roof and can damage your shingles and lead to roof leaks. To melt ice dams, use hot water rather than ice melt chemicals which can damage your roof. Also donít try to chip away at the ice as you can accidentally damage your shingles. Ultimately, youíll need to put in new insulation in your attic to fix the problem long term.

Cut away overhanging branches

Not only can overhanging branches lead to clogged rain gutters, but they can damage your shingles when they scrape across them on a windy day or when they fall during a storm. Have a tree removal service trim back or remove trees that pose a threat to your roof and home.

Clean the gutters daily in the winter season so that ice will not stay there for more. If you will not clean it on regular basis then it will end up doing costly roof repair.
