Path of Exile is usually a battle royale game for April Fools' Day (no, really)

It's April Fools' Day, so don't trust whatever you decide and read. Most developers can certainly make a throwaway announcement that could make you double take, chuckle for the few seconds, and after that move on, but Grinding Gear Games has gone the full hog and temporarily transformed its free-to-play action RPG Path of Exile in to a 100-player battle royale game. Seriously.

"Based on community feedback, we have been announcing we have abandoned the action RPG genre to spotlight what players need. Path of Exile is now being replaced by Path of Exile: Royale, a 100-person free-for-all battle royale game," it said on its website. It claims it only took some day of POE Currency development to result in the switch.

Again, that is legit: my game is updating on Steam as I type this. It'll rename itself inside your library and you can actually jump straight right into a round. Just like in other battle royale games, there's an ever-shrinking red zone to protect yourself from (the direction in the zone's centre is shown on the character's feet), even so the Path of Exile-twist is that you simply'll should fight computer-controlled monsters and also other players. Last one standing gets to be a Rhoa Dinner.

Presumably, it'll switch back on Monday. But what happens if the player count skyrockets (no sign of this yet, however it is still early)? Will Grinding Gear ensure that it stays in being a separate game mode? Surely that must be inside back of the c's's minds. For now, it looks as being a fun change of pace in the normal game, and it also might be worth diving in in the event you have an extra half hour.
